What actually determines the cost of repairing a slipped slate?
The cost of a small slate repair depends mainly on how the roof can be safely accessed, how many slates need lifting to reach the damage, and whether the existing slate needs matching. There is no single fixed price for a slipped slate repair, because those three factors vary from roof to roof and even from one side of the same roof to the other.
We do not publish a fixed price list, and we would be cautious of anyone who quotes a price for a slate repair sight unseen. A slipped slate two courses above a gutter on a single storey extension is a different job from the same fault four storeys up on a tenement front elevation, even though the underlying repair (relaying or replacing one slate) is similar.
Why we do not quote fixed prices
Two things drive the cost of most small slate jobs far more than the repair itself: access, and how much of the surrounding slate has to be disturbed to reach the fault safely. A roof that can be reached from a tower scaffold already up for other work, or safely from a ladder at low level, costs less to work on than one that needs its own independent access arrangement. That is true regardless of how small the actual repair is.

Access and how it affects cost
Height, pitch, and what is directly below the roof (a public pavement, a shared back green, a conservatory roof) all affect what access method is appropriate and safe. On tenement and townhouse roofs in particular, safe access is very often the largest single factor in the cost of an otherwise small repair.
Matching slate type and colour
Scottish slate roofs were traditionally laid with the largest slates at the eaves and progressively smaller slates toward the ridge, a method sometimes called diminishing coursing. Replacing a single slate well means finding one of a similar size, thickness, and colour, so it sits correctly within that pattern rather than standing out or sitting proud of its neighbours. Where an exact reclaimed match is not available, we will tell you honestly rather than fit something that will look wrong or perform poorly.
